Warner Bros. Cancels Hogwarts Legacy Expansion: Here’s Why Warner Bros. Cancels Hogwarts Legacy Expansion: Here’s Why

There’s bad news for Potterheads as Warner Bros. Games has reportedly cancelled a planned story expansion for Hogwarts Legacy, the company’s biggest gaming success in recent years.

The decision, first reported by Bloomberg, comes to the surface of the company’s ongoing restructuring effort that has seen the closure of three studios and the cancellation of multiple high-profile projects.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the downloadable content (DLC) was expected to add new content to the action-packed game, which has sold over 34 million copies since its 2023 launch.

Warner Bros. Games has been grappling with major losses in 2024, which amount to around  $300 million. It is largely due to an underperforming release. The most notable setback was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is a live-service shooter that failed to attract its player base. It resulted in losses exceeding $200 million.

The company’s online multiplayer game, MultiVersus, and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions also struggled to meet sales expectations. It contributes to a further $100 million in losses.

The DLC, developed by Avalanche Software in partnership with Rocksteady Studios, reportedly featured a companion storyline that was initially cut from the base game.

However, insiders noted that Warner Bros. has concerns about whether expansion will go in their favour and offer enough content to justify the pricing.

“The company is being highly selective about where it invests its resources, and post-launch content with limited scope is no longer a priority,” a source close to the matter explained.
