Fans of fantasy adventures and tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) have a new reason to gather their friends in both ways; virtually or in person.
Sunderfolk, a new cooperative RPG from Secret Door and Dreamhaven, has arrived with a clever twist: no Dungeon Master needed, and your smartphone becomes your controller.
It was launched on April 23 across major gaming platforms, including Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Sunderfolk contains classic tabletop storytelling with the ease of a digital game.
Up to four players can embark on a fantasy quest together, with only one person needing to buy the $49.99 game. Friends can join remotely using a free mobile application, which makes this a cost-effective option for gamers who miss the feel of gathering around a D&D table.
The game uses a turn-based combat system on a hex grid, which reflects the strategic feel of traditional TTRPGs.
Players can take on one of six pre-designed classes, such as Bard, Berserker, or Pyromancer. It uses “Skill Cards” to battle enemies and complete quests.
What sets Sunderfolk apart is not just its lush visuals or cooperative gameplay. It is how it reduces the complexity for newcomers. There is no prep time, no need for rulebooks, and no confusion over character creation.
