The latest report suggests that the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella has reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to gaming. Speaking to Dwarkesh Patel, Nadella refuted the notion that Microsoft views gaming as merely a stepping stone for its future growth. This shows that it remains an integral part of the company’s identity.

“So, gaming has got a long history at the company, and we want to be in gaming for gaming’s sake. I always start by saying I hate to be in businesses where they’re means to some other end. They have to be ends unto themselves,” Satya Nadella said.

His statement contrasts with the company’s previous stance when Microsoft once considered spinning off its Xbox division. Microsoft recently laid off over 2,500 employees in gaming roles, though the connection to AI remains uncertain.

His remarks came in reply to speculation that gaming plays a role in Microsoft’s broader artificial intelligence strategy, with some suggesting that gaming data could help train AI models. While Nadella mentioned gaming’s role in AI advancement, he stressed the company’s primary focus remains on delivering high-quality gaming experiences.

One key area of investment is cloud gaming, which Nadella believes will expand the total addressable market (TAM) and make gaming more accessible globally. Additionally, Microsoft is leveraging AI-based tools, such as its Muse technology to streamline game development. However, Nadella made it clear that AI should enhance human creativity rather than replace it.
