Ubisoft has released Update 10.2 for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which delivers a slate of performance refinements and feature additions that improve the overall gameplay experience.
The patch is a support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro, which is a feature that has attracted both excitement and debate since Sony’s mid-gen hardware refresh.
It rolled out at 15:00 BST/16:00 CEST, the update is available on all platforms today. Its download size ranges from 9 GB on Mac to 19.5 GB on Xbox Series X/S.
While this is only the game’s second post-launch update, the scope suggests Ubisoft is aiming to address both technical and user-experience concerns.
PSSR and the PS5 Pro Dilemma
Perhaps the most important addition in this update is PSSR support for PS5 Pro, finally filling the gap that left early adopters of the console wondering whether developers would fully embrace Sony’s proprietary upscaling tech. Until now, Assassin’s Creed Shadows was running on the upgraded console without actually using PSSR; something that was confirmed by both Digital Foundry’s analysis and Ubisoft developers.
That Ubisoft waited until after the PS5 Pro’s launch to implement the feature may have been a strategic choice. Many early titles that rushed to support the new hardware were plagued with inconsistent frame rates and visual artifacts. On the other hand, Ubisoft’s delay suggests a deliberate effort to optimize the tech before deploying it.
Digital Foundry’s review already praised the game for achieving ray-traced global illumination in performance mode, which is a visual feat on any console.
