According to the latest report, a new firmware update for Xbox Series X/S is causing major headaches for some users, wiping profits and resetting consoles to factory settings. However, the issue only affects a small group of players; those in the Xbox Insider testing program.
Whatโs Happening On Xbox?
Microsoftโs Xbox Insider program allows players to test new features before theyโre released to the public. But as with any pre-release software, there are risks. This time, players in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead tiers are reporting that the latest update has completely erased their profiles.
Whoโs Affected?
The problem appears to be limited to Xbox Insider testers. Tom Warren, the reporter at The Verge, confirmed that his profile was wiped. VGC also reported a similar issue, noting that while installed games remained, all personal settings were lost.ย
What Was the Update Supposed to Fix?
The update aimed to resolve an issue where Xbox profiles would incorrectly display as another userโs. It is also intended to improve Dolby Vision detection. Instead, it has unexpectedly reset consoles creating more problems than it solved.
What Can You Do?
For now, the Xbox Insider social media accounts have not acknowledged the issue. If youโre in the Insider program and want to avoid further risks, you can opt out by going to the Xbox Insider Hub and selecting โLeave Preview.โ To completely close an account, navigate to Settings>Manage account>Close account.
Should You Be Worried?
The exact number of affected users is unclear, as Microsoft does not disclose Xbox Insider participation data. However, the vast majority of Xbox players are not part of the program, which means this issue is unlikely to impact the general gaming community.
